Bexhill MP to visit charity shop supporting Alzheimer’s research
Greg Barker, MP for Bexhill and Battle, will visit Shirley Annes charity shop in Bexhill-on-Sea on Friday 4 December. He will meet Shirley Golding, the enterprising lady who opened the store in October in support of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust.
During his visit, Greg Barker will also meet representatives from the Alzheimer’s Research Trust to find out more about the vital research it funds into preventions, treatments and a cure for dementia.
Greg Barker MP said: “I admire Shirley’s hard work and selfless attitude in setting up this project to raise money for dementia research. The prevalence of dementia in East Sussex is high, with nearly 10,000 people in the region living with this devastating condition, which causes heart-break for families and puts a strain on carers, the NHS and social services. I recognise that the true impact of dementia has been overlooked for too long and that more funding is essential.”
Shirley Golding explained her motivation for supporting the Alzheimer’s Research Trust: “My mum died with Alzheimer’s disease nearly two years ago so I know only too well what the pressures are like when you are caring for someone with dementia. As her condition progressed she forgot what everyday things were used for, she couldn’t dress herself or feed herself and became totally dependent.
“By opening the shop, my aim is to raise as much money as possible for research and in turn give hope to those living with dementia. The support I have received from my team of volunteers and people in the town has been fantastic.”
Dr Marie Janson, Director of Development for the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, said: “We are delighted that Greg Barker is showing his support for Shirley’s hard work and the vital research we fund. There are 700,000 people in the UK with dementia and this number is expected to double within a generation. More investment in research is desperately needed - with enough funding Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia can be defeated.”
