Building a picture of Alzheimer's

brain scan This study is using state-of-the art imaging techniques to look at the brain during Alzheimer’s.

Grant Holder: Dr Cathleen Haense

Based: University of Manchester

Grant Details: £104,076 over 2 years from Oct 09

Dr Cathleen Haense is leading the research at the University of Manchester.

Dr Haense, who works at the Wolfson Centre for Brain Imaging, hopes to better understand changes in the brain caused by Alzheimer’s, including memory loss. Her findings may also improve early detection of Alzheimer’s disease.

The researchers will be able to see changes in structure and function caused by Alzheimer’s by building a comprehensive picture of the brain.

To make their picture of the brain they will bring together clinical assessments, genetic analysis and state of the art imaging techniques. Alzheimer’s patients have different symptoms - they hope to show that brain images will match up with the differences between patients seen in the clinic.
